A Study on the Applicability of Guided Imagery to Expressive Arts Therapy
Chung Hyung-Chul

Abstract
Guided imagery is a psychotherapeutic technique that uses powerful images to improve our own health and emotional well-being. The effectiveness of guided imagery has been proved by researchers who demonstrate its positive impact on healing, happiness, and creativity. This study intends to find ways to apply guided imagery technique to the expressive arts therapy. After surveying the historical background and religious underpinnings of guided imagery, this study attempts to compare guided imagery technique with bibliotherapy. And then, we discuss a guided imagery script in comparison with practical tactics of the expressive arts therapy. The expressive arts therapy also engages in the therapeutic use of images. Both guided imagery and the expressive arts therapy put an emphasis on the healing aspects of these images and imagination. The expressive arts therapists' psychotherapeutic use of arts as well as the guided imagery psychotherapists' production of healing sensory images means exploring our inner realms to discover unresolved desires and feelings. Expressive arts therapy as "the therapeutic aesthetic" can adopt guided imagery technique as "the aesthetic therapy" to cure ourselves. Expressive arts therapy can be carried out more effectively using guided imagery as an alternative method.
